Pool Removal in Chattanooga: Your Options, the Costs, and the Hole

Every year more Chattanooga homeowners do the math on an aging pool — resurfacing bills, pump replacements, insurance riders, and a feature the kids outgrew — and decide the hole is worth more as yard. Here's what removing a pool actually involves, what it costs, and the one decision that matters most.

Partial vs. full removal — the decision that drives everything

Partial removal (fill-in): the deck and top portion of the shell get demolished, holes are punched through the bottom for drainage, and the cavity is backfilled and compacted in lifts, then graded and finished. It's the budget option — typically $4,000–$9,000 for most residential pools in the Chattanooga area.

Full removal: the entire shell — gunite, fiberglass, or vinyl walls — comes out and gets hauled to a licensed facility, then the hole is backfilled with compacted, documented fill. Typically $8,000–$15,000+ depending on pool size and access for equipment.

Why the cheap option has a catch

A partially removed pool is, in most jurisdictions and every buyer's eyes, a disclosed condition: you'll generally need to tell future buyers there's a buried shell, and many builders won't put a structure or addition over a fill-in without engineering work. Full removal with compaction documentation returns the footprint to buildable, unencumbered yard. If you might ever sell to a family that wants a garage back there — or add one yourself — the extra cost of full removal is usually the better long-term math.

What the project looks like

Utility disconnects come first — pool electrical and gas lines done safely and documented. Then controlled demolition (a day or two for most pools), haul-off with disposal tickets, engineered backfill compacted in lifts so the area doesn't settle into a crater, and finish grading. Good access makes everything cheaper; a backyard pool behind a narrow gate costs more than one a machine can reach.

Getting a real number

Bids should state: partial or full, what happens to the debris (licensed facility, tickets provided), backfill material and compaction method, and finish grade.
